I know that a lot of people on this site, and other sites like this, don't have much interest in half-hour comedies, but I want to write about The Good Place anyway because I've been thinking about the current TV season and I realized that this is my favorite current show!
The Good Place is the story of Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) who discovers that she has died and that, because of the selfless way she lived, she is now in "the good place". Eleanor's problem is that there's been a mistake. She was not a good person at all and definitely doesn't belong here, but she desperately doesn't want to be discovered and sent to "the bad place".
But there's more going on. The season one finale contained a big reveal (I won't spoil it here) that came as a complete surprise to many viewers. I wasn't totally surprised, although I hadn't guessed the actual secret. Maybe most viewers took the show at face value, but those of us who are familiar with fantasy and science fiction probably knew that something didn't quite add up. I think it's because we pay attention to the background and the world-building in a way that other viewers don't. The consequences of the big reveal have just made the show more fun to watch.
If the afterlife fantasy elements aren't enough for you, there's also an interesting science-fictional AI character, called Janet, who adds a lot to the show. In fact, at the time of this writing, the most recent episode ("Janet and Michael") was a Janet-centric episode where Kristen Bell's character didn't appear until the final minutes.
Added into the mix, this is the only show I'm aware of that regularly includes discussions of Aristotle, Kant and other major philosophers!
In short, the characters are interesting, the actors--especially Kristen Bell and Ted Danson--are great (Ted Danson's performance in the season one finale deserves special praise), and the writing is great too. If I can bring just a few more fans to the show my work here is done!
